In My City: Interactive Learn & Play Vocabulary Module

Welcome to a highly engaging digital ESL lesson focusing on the "In My City" unit. Specially designed for young learners, this interactive smartboard module seamlessly integrates explicit vocabulary instruction with a gamified auditory assessment. It is the perfect tool for building a strong foundation in urban vocabulary and location-based inquiries.

Target Vocabulary & Structures

This module focuses on essential public places and the foundational question structure used to locate them:

  • Urban Places: Hospital, zoo, library, school, park, museum, bank, shopping centre.
  • Target Structure: "Where is [the park]?"

Game Modes & Scaffolded Learning

This activity implements a "Scaffolded Learning" model, ensuring a stress-free educational environment across two distinct phases:

  • Step 1: LEARN Mode (Explicit Instruction)
Students begin by clicking the "Learn" button. They are presented with digital flashcards for each city location. Every flashcard combines a high-quality visual, the written word, and clear native audio pronunciation. This step allows students to acquire the vocabulary at their own pace without the pressure of testing.
  • Step 2: PLAY Mode (Auditory Assessment)
In the "Play" phase, students test their newly acquired knowledge. Two different location images appear on the screen, accompanied by an audio prompt. Students must process the auditory cue (essentially answering the "Where is...?" question in real-time) and tap the corresponding image.
  • Reward System:
Correct answers are instantly rewarded with golden stars! This gamification element transforms a standard listening test into an exciting challenge, keeping classroom engagement and student motivation remarkably high.

Educational Benefits

By separating the learning phase from the assessment phase, this digital tool effectively lowers the affective filter (language anxiety). It significantly enhances visual-word association, auditory processing speeds, and confidence in recognizing daily urban vocabulary in English.
